No fireworks on Fourth over Jack London Square

OAKLAND -- For the first time in many years, no bombs will be bursting in air over Jack London Square on the Fourth of July.

City officials announced Tuesday the annual fireworks celebration had been canceled because of concerns that an ongoing construction project, which has limited pedestrian access and parking, could increase the danger of fire.

Council President Ignacio De La Fuente (Glenview-Fruitvale) said the cancellation was "very sad" and he was upset the Port of Oakland, which hosts the celebration, had not given the city more notice to find an alternative for Independence Day ...
