Remake of Jack London Square gets slow start

OAKLAND -- How successful Jack London Square was in its first year under private ownership depends largely on the patience of the person judging.

Since San Francisco-based Ellis Partners won the city's approval to remake the waterfront district into a bustling retail center, more businesses have closed than opened.

El Torito, Old Spaghetti Factory and T.G.I. Friday's shut down their kitchens in the last year. A Scottish-themed trinket store, a Russian doll shop and a cafe also closed.

And a parking lot that's to be transformed into a vibrant market hall to serve as the square anchor remains ...
