OAKLAND -- El Torito Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, a fixture in Jack London Square for almost 15 years, will close Sunday, leaving a prime piece of storefront space vacant.

Real Mex Restaurants, which owns the restaurant chain, decided to end its lease for space in the 66 Franklin St. building six years early.

The decision comes just as the building's new owner, Ellis Partners of San Francisco, is poised to refurbish the one-time warehouse. As part of its $300 million redevelopment of the Square, Ellis Partners plans to tear off the building's facade to reveal its original ...
