IT was just a workshop, but Tuesday night's Oakland City Council session with the would-be developer of a major Jack London Square makeover project, as well as neighbors and community activists, was a good start to what hopefully becomes a constructive dialogue.

We were heartened that council members asked some tough questions and that the two key players for Ellis Partners responded by indicating they are willing to make some changes to their plan to assure the community they truly intend to deliver a "world-class" development.
