Buck had defeated Spitz, his arch-enemy. Therefore, he concluded, he
should now be the leader of the team. Francois and Perrault, however, had
other ideas. They selected Sol-leks, the older and more experienced dog, as
the leader. Buck would not hear of this and refused to allow himself to be
harnessed in his usual position in front of Dave. For almost an hour the two
