When John Rakes found out he was one of two students in the state to receive a $5,000 Horatio Alger Scholarship, it was an answer to his prayers.
Despite hard times, Rakes had always dreamed of going to college. His mother, Kay Rakes, also has hoped and prayed that he would finish college.
