Talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey has been named a winner of the Horatio Alger Award, given to those who overcome adversity to become leaders in their fields.
Ms. Winfrey has said she was sexually abused as a child and has urged other victims of abuse to come forward and get help.
The 10 other winners included Housing Secretary Jack Kemp, K-mart Corp. Chairman Joseph E. Antonini, and Deen Day Smith, chairman of Cecil B. Day Cos. Inc., the parent company of Days Inns.
