Governor wins Horatio Alger Award

Gov. Tommy Thompson Monday was named one of 10 national winners of the 1998 Horatio Alger Award.

The award, presented annually by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, goes to individuals who "exemplify inspirational success, triumph over adversity, and an uncommon commitment to helping others."

Thompson was honored by the non-profit organization for his efforts in cutting taxes, helping to create 600,000 new jobs in Wisconsin and reforming the welfare system, the group said.
