Syndicated columnist Art Buchwald, Sen. Daniel K. Inouye (D-Hawaii) and former pro basketball star Julius "Dr. J." Erving are among 10 winners of this year's Horatio Alger Awards, given to Americans who have triumphed over "humble beginnings and adversity" to achieve success.
Buchwald, 63, grew up during the Depression in an orphanage and foster homes. Inouye, 64, grew up in a Japanese ghetto area of Honolulu. Erving, 39, helped support his family by working odd jobs as a teenager.
