Henry Adams once described the electric Theodore Roosevelt as "pure act."

The same could be said of conductor Tom Pedersen at the podium: a bright-eyed mass of constant energy. His big arms pump back and forth furiously as his Broadway grin warns the cast: Smile - or else.

"If anyone would have told me when I was 18 years old that I would be teaching in Washington and conducting musicals, I would have said, `From what building did you fall off?' " Mr. Pedersen says. "I'm gonna tap-dance my way to Broadway! Get outta the way!"
