Dear Lady,

I have just returned from a brief trip to New York to see Ternina in the Gotter- dammerung, which was a world-shaking experience. That I, in my dotage, should fall a victim to the Wagnerian religion is one of the wildest experiences in this weird world. Evidently I near my end. . . .

. . .I would like to come down to talk religion with you. Nothing would suit me so well. The truth is that this American world, or rather this twentieth century, strains my nerves to a point which needs rest. You perhaps are in a quiet eddy of it. ...
