NATURE lovers are racing against time to buy a stretch of river which is thought to have inspired Kenneth Grahame to write Wind in the Willows.
A 72-acre plot bordering the Pang near Pangbourne in Berkshire is being sold for [pounds sterling]235,000 by its current owner, aggregates firm Cemex, and conservationists fear it could ultimately be used for housing.
The Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has first refusal to buy the site but it still has to come up with the cash. The deadline is December 8.
