A COLONY of water voles has been micro-chipped before being released into the wild in a bid to find out why the species is in such decline.
Water voles - the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame's much loved literary creation Ratty in the Wind in the Willows - have seen their numbers plummet across Britain and naturalists fear they could soon be eradicated.
Staff at the Wildwood Centre, near Herne Bay, Kent, have been working on a breeding programme to release a colony along the River Arun in Sussex.
