One hundred years ago Kenneth Grahame's (1859-1932) novel The Wind in the Willows (interestingly originally titled The Children of Pan), now regarded as a literary classic, was first published.
Surprisingly, this story that tells of the adventures of Ratty, Mole, Badger and Mr Toad on The Riverbank received a somewhat muted reception, and it would be some years before it was regarded as a true classic.
To this day, the chapter that describes Mole and Ratty meeting the demi-God Pan as they search for the missing otter Ottley is one of the most memorable I have read.
