RATTY, Toad and Mr Mole messing about on the shady banks of a babbling brook with a hamper stuffed with Fortnum & Mason goodies is still an idyllic vision, one conjured up by Kenneth Grahame in 1908 for The Wind in the Willows. In truth though, the situation down by the river has turned a whole lot grimmer than the author once led his readers believe.
