George Eliot's book 'Silas Marner' is observed to possess a similar theme to the legendary tale 'Rumpelstiltskin.' The mysterious dwarf, Rumpelstiltskin, spins straw into gold while Silas weaves thread into gold. The dwarf attempts to exchange his gold for a child, while Silas actually receives the child. However, Eliot portrays Silas as a more gentle, humane individual compared to the wicked dwarf. His humanizing of the book's characters defeats fairy tale conventions and creates a unique kind of literature.
