George Eliot's 'Mill on the Floss' suggests that the main character, Maggie, does not represent an attempt to erase psychic boundaries but, rather, an attempt to establish autonomy and individuality. While Maggie's individual identity is obliterated by marriage, she is constantly identified with Miss Unit, a character who reminds the reader of Maggie's subconscious desire for autonomy and separate selfhood. Moreover, the name of Miss Unit at once suggests a single entity, an undivided whole and wrongness or error, all of which apply to Maggie and her marriage.
