Chapter Thirty-Six

Mr. Vincy's outlook changes now that Fred has been left nothing; he warns
Fred that he had better pass his examinations. Fred who only twenty-four hours
ago had expectations of paying his debts and becoming a gentleman of
leisure, is crushed completely. He was sure Mary would have married him once
he inherited the money.

Mr. Vincy refuses to give his consent for Rosamond to marry Lydgate,
because he "hasn't a farthing." Mrs. Vincy is distressed because Rosamond has
already begun preparations for the wedding; ...
