Prelude

From rugged Avila, a Spanish town, St. Theresa ventured forth one day
into the fearful land of the Moors. The innocent little girl and her younger
brother had left to sow goodness and gain martyrdom-and both were stopped by
their uncles.

Comment:

One of the basic themes of Middlemarch is the disparity between one's
idealistic goals and the difficulties which life provides to thwart them. St.
Theresa and her brother represent idealism; their uncles symbolize reality.
