FRIENDS and family said farewell to bestselling author and Baldrine resident George MacDonald Fraser at his funeral at St Andrew's Church, in Douglas, on Friday.

The 82-year-old, who died on January 2, was best known for his Flashman series of books based on the character created by Thomas Hughes in the Victorian novel Tom Brown's Schooldays.

His was a long writing career - spanning almost 40 years.

Mr Fraser wrote the first Flashman novel in 1969 after which he moved to the Island where he had enjoyed family holidays.
