GEORGE MacDonald Fraser, author of the Flashman books, has died at 82.

The former soldier, who had been fighting cancer, worked as a journalist at theScotsman newspaper for many years and also wrote movie screenplays.

But it is for his 11 brilliantlyconstructed and hilarious novels based aroundHarry Flashman that he will be best remembered.
