"Certainly work is not always required of a man," wrote the Scottish minister George Macdonald. "There is such a thing as a sacred idleness -- the cultivation of which is now fearfully neglected."
Americans could benefit from reading Macdonald's thoughts about relaxation, if they just didn't have so much to get done. In a culture where being busy is seen as a virtue, being idle is a vice. If you're not toiling away in the workshop, then the devil toils away in his -- your idle mind.
