THE candles are being lit for one of the district's greatest writers as Wakefield prepares to celebrate the 150th birthday of George Gissing.

The Wakefield-born novelist was born a century and a half ago next Thursday and the council is holding two public events to celebrate his life and work on the day.

Events will include a ceremony to reveal a blue plaque on his childhood home at number 60 Westgate, which is now a bank.
