In the title sequence of Apocalypse Now, just at the moment when napalm fireballs blossom among palm trees, Jim Morrison assures us that "This is the end." Like Robert Frost, it seems, Coppola favors the view of those who say the world will end in fire. Yet, two-and-a-half hours later (in the original version), the movie itself concludes without, apparently, confirming the prolepsis of the opening. Willard shuts off communication with the aptly named "Almighty," choosing not to call in an air strike on Kurtz's encampment. The film thus appears to veer away from a trajectory ...
