One Step Backward Taken: Summary:

The poem begins with an image of the world in dissolution. The air is
filled with sand and gravel; the earth appears to have been transformed into
a vast swamp; boulders roll crazily into one another, and then careen into a
gully. The speaker indicates that in this time of crisis he is on secure
ground. However, at this point instead of stepping forward into the world
which is coming apart, he takes a step backward. As he moves backward the
chaotic world passes him by; then things become ...
