The Rose Family: Summary
The speaker opens with a statement about the rose. He says that it is no
other thing than a rose, and that it has always been a rose. In the modern
world, however, there is a theory that many things are roses. According to
this theory plums and pears are roses, and if the theory holds sway there is
no telling what may next become a rose. The speaker ends the poem by
addressing a person. He identifies this person as a rose that has always been
a rose.
