Rising from the proverbial -- and not so proverbial -- ashes of urban decay and defying the smugly written obituaries pronouncing its permanent decline, Chicago has become the symbol of urban renaissance. Just recently, the Boston Globe pronounced, "This will be the center, geographically, emotionally, spiritually, of the nation."
It then referenced a 1903 quote from famed muckraker Frank Norris: "Here, mid-most in the land, beat the Heart of the Nation, whence inevitably must come its immeasurable power, its infinite, infinite inexhaustible vitality."
