Theodore Dreiser's description of an old man in 'An American Tragedy' may be a reference to the central character of Frank Norris' 'McTeague.' Both novels depict flight from justice. Details such as the old man's birdcage and winter dress in July seem superfluous without further explanation. The allusion to the birdcage - a central feature of Norris' novel - may be a tribute to Norris for his support of Dreiser. The incongruous clothes for July also fits in with the winter setting of 'McTeague.'
