Producer restoring lost parts of `Greed'

Movie history is strewn with legends of missing footage that, once found, would restore the health of wounded masterpieces.

Sometimes, though, the legends turn out to be true. That was the case with Orson Welles' "Touch of Evil," which, last year, four decades after its initial release, was cut into the shape originally envisioned by Welles. The head of that restoration project, Rick Schmidlin, is now engaged in another of the quests, this time on Erich von Stroheim's 1925 classic, "Greed."
