Silent film director Eric Von Stroheim would have reveled in the television phenomenon we call the mini-series.

Unlike the works of most directors in the 1920s, his films - in which every detail was perfect, from the development of the set to the motivation of his actors - were very lengthy works. Unfortunately, in his extravagance he created an early version of the mini-series and in the process alienated Hollywood studio bosses.
