Critical Commentary

Critics have attacked The Octopus with a certain vehemence - from the
reviewers who found it vulgar when it first came out to the literary
historians who now look back at it as too romantic and evasive. The early
reviewers now appear ridiculous; of course, they were judging from the point
of view of average members of their epoch. The standard of
turn-of-the-century reviewers for literature was that a book could be read
around the dinner table with all members of the family present.
