Chapter Eight

A month later Presley visits Cedarquist in San Francisco to report the
complete defeat of the farmers by the railroad, and to get passage away from
California on one of Cedarquist's ships. In his despair as a failure, he wants
to find the surviving women of the Hooven family in order to help them before
