Chapter One

Initial impressions of California's San Joaquin Valley are given through
the eyes of Presley, the main character in the novel, as he makes a long trip
through the geographical area where the bulk of the story will take place.
Presley meets Hooven, an immigrant farmer living on the Los Muertos Ranch,
who asks Presley to intercede for him to ensure that he not be discharged
from the ranch for reason of economy. Harran Derrick, son of the owner of
Los Muertos, whom Presley next visits, introduces the central conflict ...
