Parallels are drawn between Elizabeth Gaskell's 'Ruth' and the Evangelicals' attempts to rescue the fallen woman. The influence of Evangelicalism in 'Ruth' is examined.
In Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth, the theme (Ruth's fall and rehabilitation) reflects the magdalenist movement in which the Evangelicals took an initiative.
