SHE has appeared in countless period dramas, from The Importance Of Being Earnest, to the recent movie version of Pride And Prejudice, but it seems the pull of the past never recedes with the Oscar-winning actress.

Dame Judi Dench is nowone of 22 lead actors starring in Liverpool scriptwriter Heidi Thomas's sumptuous BBC adaptation of three of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels, set in the fictional Cheshire town of Cranford.
