PICTURE this, a couple of Dames-Judi Denchand Eileen Atkins sitting in a field in full period costume while sporting wellies, anoraks and bin-liners doubling up as make-shift hats.

No, it's not an out-take from Children In Need, but the reality of location filming in the pouring rain.

Garston writer Heidi Thomas recalls this sight and many more like them during the filming of the new BBC1 period drama Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford which started on Saturday.

The Wiltshire village of Lacock doubled as Knutsford.
