MICHAEL PALIN is dispatched to distant frontiers, children's TV is enjoying bigger budgets and, after a ten-year hiatus, the BBC has launched a weekly arts programme, tired of being outshone by Five.
And last night saw the arrival of an expensive new dramatisation in four parts of Elizabeth Gaskell's Victorian novel North And South, an estimable work but one that's hardly guaranteed to pull in a mass audience for BBC1.
