THIS latest BBC costume drama, told in five parts, premiered on Sunday night. It was adapted from one of three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell, which were often witty comedies of manners with plenty of wry commentary on the social structure of the period they were set in.
Dames Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins lent their considerable talents to this new production. They played Miss Matty and Miss Deborah, respectively, and together they stood at the forefront of a gaggle of snooty ladies from the picturesque Cheshire market town of Cranford.
