Dench is the dame of period dramas

Dame Judi Dench has appeared in countless period dramas, from The Importance Of Being Earnest to the recent movie version of Pride And Prejudice, but it seems the pull of the past never recedes with the Oscar-winning actress.

She is now one of 22 lead actors starring in Heidi Thomas's sumptuous BBC adaptation of three of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels, set in the fictional north-west town of Cranford.

While some might imagine Dame Judi could perform her role as kindly spinster Miss Matty Jenkyns with her eyes shut, she says every role she takes on is still a challenge.
