Thomas Carew's verses that were written to Ben Jonson and his elegy addressed to John Donne should be analyzed in their original form and in the poetic styles of their times. Carew, whose style of prose is often described as a mixture of both Jonson and Donne, should be viewed instead as a contemporary and rival of the two masters. His verse letters and elegy, the works that have received much focus in the past 20 years, can then be interpreted not as imitation but as a means to show the readers that he is a better poet.
