VANCOUVER-BORN Mary Novik's debut novel, Conceit, is an excellent entry into the arena of female-oriented historical fiction.

Novik uses the story of the famous love poet turned priest John Donne as a background for a breathtaking coming-of-age story exploring the themes of love and sensuality in 17th-century England.

Like her sister historical writer Tracy Chevalier in Girl With a Pearl Earring, Novik shows true sensitivity to the art that inspired her.
