Where do you stand on crypts? In my view, they should be dark, chilly, suffocating places, a concrete reminder of the alternative that makes the Church's cheerful promise of eternal life so attractive. The C of E wouldn't have half so much trouble attracting recruits if it had kept its crypts Gothic, instead of turning them into wine-bars. The crypt of St Paul's Cathedral is typical of the new breed: light, airy and with a wide selection of refreshments; the only undead you're likely to encounter here are City bankers in their lunch hour.
