A team of maritime archaeologists from the University of St Andrews is to search for the final resting place among the Essex marshes of HMS Beagle, the ship Charles Darwin served on as a naturalist. After circumnavigating the globe between 1831-36, the 10-gun brig-sloop was laid up at Woolwich in 1840 and five years later assigned by the Admiralty to the Coast Guard Service for anti-smuggling duties. It is thought that she served near Southend. A study of the point at which she was beached in 1850 has revealed a dense scatter of Victorian pottery, plus parts of the ship. (May ...
