Synge, [Edmund] J[ohn] M[illington] (1871–1909), playwright. Born in Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin, to a family of ecclesiastics and landowners. In childhood Synge began to study Charles Darwin, and found it increasingly difficult to accept his mother's religious outlook. Educated at TCD, where he learnt Irish, his interest in the language was rewarded with the Irish Prize (1892). He travelled to Germany, where he studied music; but, turning to literature, he settled in Paris in 1895.
