The Northern Territory University will be renamed Charles Darwin University by mid-2003. The Northern Territory's Chief Minister, Clare Martin, said the university will receive extra funding of $A1.5 million in 2003-04, allowing it to add a new research centre focusing on indigenous health, wildlife conservation and alternative energy sources. She said the name change had been driven partly by the university's low reputation in its early years, and the need to give the institution a fresh look.
