"Those were the days when the hop was king," James Fenimore Cooper wrote.

Saturday, hop will get a queen.

The Madison County Hop Fest has crowned a "hop king" in each of its previous seven years, but this year the festival will honor Mary Rose Durfee as its first hop queen.

Hop Fest will be Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's activities are all day on the grounds of Cottage Lawn, the historical society's headquarters and museum at 435 Main St., Oneida. There'll be talks and demonstrations in the morning, starting at 9 a.m., and beer sampling ...
