LOS ANGELES Written in 1826, James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans could have been the prototype for one of Hollywood's most popular genres, the buddy movie.
It's the story of Hawkeye, a frontier scout, and his adventures with his Indian pal Chingachgook and Uncas, Chingachgook's son, during the French and Indian War. It's biracial male bonding on the order of "Dances With Wolves," and what better director to bring it to the screen than Michael Mann, the fellow who first made black and white buddies high concept with the hit TV show "Miami Vice"?
