`Last' Shall be First At the Box Office

LOS ANGELES "The Last of the Mohicans" was first at the box office in its debut weekend, earning an estimated $10.8 million, industry sources said.

The film based on James Fenimore Cooper's classic Indian tale displaced last week's leader, "Sneakers," which earned an estimated $5.9 million.

Billy Crystal's "Mr. Saturday Night" and "Captain Ron" were in a close race for third place, with $4.7 million.

"Singles" was fifth with $3.3 million, followed by "School Ties" at $2.6 million.
