prairie

prairie The grasslands stretching from the MISSISSIPPI RIVER to the foothills of the ROCKY MOUNTAINS; roughly, a synonym for the Great Plains. The word, which is French for "meadow," is used in numerous combinations, including prairie dog, for the region's gopherlike rodent, prairie fire, PRAIRIE OYSTER, and prairie schooner. "The Prairie" (1827), the third of James Fenimore Cooper' s LEATHERSTOCKING TALES, tells of the old age and death of Natty Bumppo. Illinois is the Prairie State.
