Chapter 22

Judith and Hetty discuss Tom Hutter. They talk over what they should do,
now that the man who has protected them is dead. Judith prefers to return to
the settlement (near the fort); Hetty says: "I would rather stay here." Hetty
points out differences between handsome Hurry and the plain Deerslayer. Judith
says that she sees "a canoe stealing behind the logs." The girls discover that
the boat is paddled by Deerslayer who is alone. He joins the girls and tells
them that he is "out on furlough," having ...
